Hi Cyril,  good to hear from you. Yes, I hope everyone likes the move.

Hi

Hi Jerry,

Good move, yahoo seems to have become overbearing or should I say ‘oath’ .

I have 2 accounts on here now.  My normal user account and my Explore Scientific account as forum owner. I probably need to identify which is which in my name.

Hi Chris,

That's good to hear. If you would like, you are welcome to join me at my booth, we can spend some time during the day working with your mount if you like. I am sure other people would like to hear about your experience with the mount. What mount do you own, the G11 or the EXOS 2?

Thanks

Hey Jerry, I will be at AHSP. This will be my first ever star party and I'm looking forward to your talk to learn more about my pmc-eight mount!

I just started the process of transferring the data from this forum to the Groups.io forum. Hopefully this will be completed by the end of next week. We shall see.

Re: Alignment

hubbell_jerry@...

Hi Rick,

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your questions. The 2 star and 3 star alignment process allows the user to select any star in the alignment star list and then selects the 2nd and 3rd star as needed based on the position of the first star. I will need to test this behavior to see what the issue might be here. Also, if anyone would care to test Rick's specific scenario to verify repeatability that would be great.

What might be going on is that after selecting the first star the ExploreStars alignment routine pares down the list to only those stars that meet certain criteria for distance from the second star, and also how close it is to the horizon. This may be what is restricting you from selecting the second star you want to use. The list is pared down further in terms of the 3rd star if you are doing a 3 star alignment.

I will test this to verify that is what is going on, or if there is something else wrong.

Re: ASCOM driver problem, and the fix

hubbell_jerry@...

Welcome to the forum and thanks Tamas for your very helpful post. It's obvious that I did not do any international testing and also that the ASCOM telescope driver template code does not consider that also since your fix was not part of the template (as far as I recall).  I will make sure your changes are included in the next release version of the code. Your identification of this problem along with a detailed solution is why we share our code and make it available to everyone who uses our system.

Thanks again!

ASCOM driver problem, and the fix

thargitai01@...

Hi Jerry and everyone!

I've bought an EXOS-2 PMC-eight, and it just arrived. Great mount, I hope i can try it under the sky soon. :)
Now i'm trying to set up my gear.
Because I'm planning to use this mount mostly with ASCOM driver, i've tried the provided one and i've found a problem. I'm a developer architect (and working with .NET since 2003) so i've started to find out what happened. :)
When the ASCOM driver properties dialog opens first time, it creates the ascom profile with default values.
And there is a little problem.
I'm living in Hungary, our decimal separator is "," not "." as in the US or UK, so a FormatException occurs.
I've fixed the default profile settings from number to number, and now the driver works.
Then I've installed the driver with the source codes, to try to fix this problem at source level.
Here's the fixed parts, in Driver.vb:
Friend Shared ApertureDiameterDefault As String = Convert.ToString(0.102)
Friend Shared ApertureAreaDefault As String = Convert.ToString(0.00817)
Friend Shared FocalLengthDefault As String = Convert.ToString(0.7)
Friend Shared SiteElevationDefault As String = Convert.ToString(403.0)
Friend Shared SiteLatitudeDefault As String = Convert.ToString(36.18063)
Friend Shared SiteLongitudeDefault As String = Convert.ToString(-94.18838)
Friend Shared RateOffsetDefalut As String = Convert.ToString(0.023)
Friend Shared SiteAmbientTemperatureDefault As String = Convert.ToString(59.0)
    Friend Shared RA_SiderealRateFractionDefault As String = Convert.ToString(0.4)
    Friend Shared DEC_SiderealRateFractionDefault As String = Convert.ToString(0.4)
(these default values are declared as strings in the original source, and Convert.ToString() uses the current culture setting, so it'll work with every decimal separator setting)

Jerry, i think this small change in the driver could be useful for some users with non-US/UK localization setting. What do you think?

Best regards,
Tamas Hargitai

Alignment

Rick Walker

Hey Jerry
Just got my PMC-EIGHT on the EXOS 2. I downloaded ExploreStars yesterday (8/16/18) so should be the new version. In my backyard tonight a lot of clouds so very few stars to align with. My two best choices were Arcturus & Vega. Using either one as first of two star alignment the second star was never available. I could pick either one outside of the two star process just inable to complete the process. Is this right? Shouldn’t I be able to pick any two in the alignment groups?

Really like the mount and controller. Think I have a lot to learn.

Haven't received an email yet saying they got my invite to join the group to get the transfer started. On the Groups.io website it said it might take a week or so before they get started. I will let everyone know once it starts doing the transfer.

Started Migration of PMC-Eight Yahoo Group to Groups.io

hubbell_jerry@...

I have started the process to move all the content from the PMC-Eight Yahoo group over to Groups.io. Once all the data is transferred over (it will take a few days probably) you will be receiving an email from Groups.io asking you to join the group once the transfer is complete.

I know this has been a long time coming, I have been very busy doing other things but decided this week to go ahead and get it done so that we can move on to bigger and better things.

Thanks for all your support.

Well, I don't know how the DSS admins did it, but I think they have the ability to pull the id's over, so all the member does is hit an acknowledgement link and they're in.  I got an email that started like this:

<<<
Hello,
The owner of the DeepSkyStacker Yahoo Group has moved the group to Groups.io, a new Groups service. You have been subscribed to the new group using your email address r_hoskin@.... The name of the new group is DeepSkyStacker, and messages can be sent to it at DeepSkyStacker@groups.io. The group homepage is located...

Thanks Bob for that. It would definitely be quicker and probably more efficient to just do the switch, my concern is that a significant portion of the members would not immediately switch over. If we were to do the switch and then turn off the Yahoo group, then I would not be able to send out reminders over the transition period to remind members to switch to Groups.io. Maybe a quicker transistion period would effectively do as you say, maybe a 1 or 2 week transition period would be more appropriate.

Thanks
