Hi Chris,

Thanks for the answer - so you‘ve used Starry Night with Mac OS ? And there was no problem to switch back from USB to wifi?

Thanks and Best Regards,

I guess I would need more information about you setup to determine what might be the problem. One possibility is if you try to connect the mount driver to more than one piece of software you will have issues. Only connect to mount to POTH and then connect your individual programs via POTH.

I love living in MI but the permacloud on the west side makes AP difficult. 😁

Hi Lloyd. I see you're in Michigan. I'm in Clinton Twp, MI, about 45 minutes outside of Detroit...and about 20 minutes from Chuck of Chuck's Astrophotography. :)  Nice to see some local boys here.

Thanks for the replies. For posterity...

Initially, I was using ASCOM 6.4 and it was constantly freezing. Then I read a post where someone said to point to POTH from Carte du Ciel and other programs, and POTH to the driver. This helped a great deal, but I was still having several freezes per session. Then ASCOM 6.5 came out, so I updated to use that. The freezing persisted in about that same amount. That's when I started wiping my hard drive clean (3 different times), and eventually bought a new computer and installed ASCOM 6.5. Problem has persisted.

One thing I've noticed is that the freezing is more persistent if I am running the Celestron Desktop Focuser program. But even if I'm only running ASCOM, I get the freezing.

I've uninstalled ASCOM 6.5 and loaded 6.4. I'll try it tonight to see if it helped.

Again, thanks for the replies.

Todd

Hehe sorry I didn’t mean to offend you.

Yes the polar scope must be collimated to the ra axis of the mount.  It is necessary for its line of sight to be a true indicator of the ra axis pointing...that is what you are trying to get pointing to the NCP.

I never could use a polar scope so I spent my out of the problem of polar alignment with a polemaster.   But if you want to use the polar scope you must get it collimated.

The best way to learn how is to use google and find your self a video that you grok.  There are many.  This is a daytime procedure so you can get it done and not waste observation time.

Good luck.  If you get sick of it look into either an ipolar from ioptron or a polemaster.  If you care about polar alignment these will change your life for the better.

Thank you for your input! I will follow workflow as I just started at this crazy amazing hobby.
I found a youtube video that all it is Is white light for an hour, I used it with my tablet and it worked great as when I check the histogram its a solid line in tue middle.

Jennifer, I noticed you use APT, I just started using and at times plate solving has a hard time. I installed the 3 apps that it uses but I have noticed that only 2 are used. When I am having issues, I manually try the same image in All Sky Plate Solver and it does solve it but I am not sure if/how I can make APT use that one at those times when the other 2 fail.
do you know or have any other solution?

thanks you!

Hi Wes, are you saying collimation is necessary? If so can you explain how this is done please? I have tried by loosening and tightening the three little crosshead screws but apart from some minor movement in a rather random direction, gave up after about an hour of trying. There was no way I was ever going to achieve the objective of ensuring a centralised target remained so when turning the left right iEXOS 100 movement through 180degrees......
I know you to be a very knowledgeable and clever fella, I hope you can enlighten me!
Many thanks Wes,

Edwin:

Flats can be done the next day as long as you leave your focuser and lens untouched.  If your focus changed throughout the night it does not matter as long as +/- change was minimal.  You can use something like an iPad with a white screen  placed on the dew shield when the telescope is pointing straight up. My ES refractor’s dew shield tends to walk it’s way down on with the weight of an iPad, so I use a large rubber band directly behind the dew shield to keep it from moving.  You can sometimes get away with using a set of flats multiple times as long as any dust on the lens an/or camera sensor has not moved.

#iexos-100 with Starry Night / Mac OS #iEXOS-100

Mirko Gude

Hi,

I've got a question about the IEXOS 100 with Starry Night Pro 8. Did anyone use this combination with a Mac ?

I know how to change from UDP/IP to TCP/IP protocols with command line (I use the build in Terminal with netcat instead of Packet Sender). But I'am not sure If I have to change the settings also to serial connection (USB Cable). If I do this, will it work with Starry Night?

I was successful with IEXOS 100 and KStars (with INDI), in this case it is only necessary to change form UDP/IP to TCP/IP protocols. And because I don't have a windows machine I'am little bit afraid, that it could be possible, that I could not change the settings back from USB cable to wireless without the windows programs.

So any experiences are welcome ;-)

Thanks and best Regards,
Mirko

Be assured the issues you are having are not related to the iexos.

Some have indeed found the new ascom version is bugged.

With POTH in ascom 6.4 I have had occasional POTH crashes.  But these are seldom and I don’t think it has happened once I replaced my windows tablet with a PC.  Hasn’t happened with my bootcamped Mac mini.

I use this mount with my Celestron C8 with the 6.3 reducer and an 80 mm Orion guide scope on top I don't worry too much about cable management doesn't seem to matter in my instance.
I live in the high desert of southern California so usually at night my weather conditions are really nice.

Are you using ASCOM 6.5? If so try uninstalling and installing 6.4 SP 1. I had issues with 6.5.

I've had this issue since day 1. ASCOM constantly freezes. I have installed the latest ASCOM and have all updated drivers. I wiped my hard drive clean a few times, and I even went out and bought a brand new computer. Nothing works. Whether I'm using Carte du Ciel, or using ASCOM Device Hub directly, the issue persists.

Is this an issue inherent with ASCOM and the iEXOS 100 PMC-Eight? Are there setting I need to change?

As far as wind, if I'm at a short focal length (500mm or less) I don't have any issues with winds up to 7mph. I usually don't go out if the wind is higher than that, so I'm not sure at what point I would have issues.
At long focal lengths (2000mm +), I can see the slightest breeze, but I'm guessing that's going to happen with any mount.

Hi Zernike Polynomial (nice!)
I have no problems using this mount with my 8" SCT. It sort of looks like a 200mm newt with the dew shield on it.
On top of the SCT, I have my 80mm APO riding piggy back plus cameras on both scopes.
My total equipment weight is 27 lbs and I have 27 lbs of counterweight as well.
If the seeing is good, I can guide to about 0.5" RMS in PHD.
