Re: One beginner's guide to getting EXOS2/PMC8 fully operational with ASCOM, Stellarium, SharpCap, ASPS, and ASCOMPAD

Hello Wes, Kent,

Unfortunately I'm back to the start again - can't connect via serial!

Wifi works, but serial connectivity is dead. I've rebooted the laptop, PMC-8 controller multiple times. After selecting the scope via POTH Hub, when I try yo connect to the mount it, the app just hangs with a spinner... Any suggestions ?

Peter

This has been sorted now. It was a comms port problem. Making a serial connection on the correct comms port in PMC-Eight Configuration Manager unlocked the other 'Try' buttons which had been greyed out. This allowed the connection.

Hi John,

I don't know if you noticed it during the install of the new platform. You can check the box to install POTH if you want it. That and 3 other programs are not automatically installed with version 6.5 but they are still available to install. This would probably only apply if you manually remove the previous platform version and install 6.5 fresh.

I just updated one of my control computers (the one I use as my primary to control my EXOS-II - PCM8 mount this weekend with ASCOM 6.5 - without installing new drivers) - I did not initially realize the elimination of the POTH hub in this version but after a few minutes of reading, I found the settings and connected the mount to Cartes du Ciel and did some slewing around inside the living room and did some unguided tracking (again inside) with my scope on the mount.

I also updated my Sequence Generator Pro to recognize the changes - should have clear skies tomorrow but so far it went without a hitch - famous last words... the good news is that I did not buy any new equipment so I should get some clear skies in the next few days to give it a real world test. I'll document my journey and let you know how it goes.

Prior to the update from 6.4 I had my comet hunter/Nikon D810 mounted for imaging along with my guide camera and was getting total RMS around 1 with the RA sitting around .87" and Dec around .5" - I run through a boosted USB and ASCOM guiding for the guide camera.

Only one driver can connect to the mount at a time...that driver has to be the ASCOM driver for the mount.  Then you run POTHHUB which then connects using ASCOM to the driver.  Other software like SGP or others then connect to the mount on POTHHUB

Re: PMC-8 & ASCOM / 1 program at a time #EXOS2 #iEXOS-100

Joe,

The magic word you are looking for is 'POTH'.

It's an ASCOM component, and it is a server process (basically, a messaging hub).  You connect POTH to the mount (PMC8), and then you connect your various control applications to POTH, which routes messages between applications connected to it, as required.

Lots of threads here on POTH, driver setup, etc.  But that's the missing piece - all of that control messaging runs through POTH, and POTH (via the PMC8 driver) is the only program that connects directly to the mount.

I cannot connect PHD2 and Cartes du ciel at the same time. Once I am connected to say Cartes du ciel and then try to connect to PHD2, i get the same error of "ASCOM driver problem during connection (ASCOM.Utilties) Access to the port 'COM7' is denied". This happens with any combination of programs, only one can be connected. I have to disconnect from Cartes du ciel and then I can connect just fine to PHD2. I have all the latest ASCOM drivers installed and again, any single program works fine. Is this normal for this mount? Ultimately, I am trying to run Sequence Generator and everything connect through that, but again, I can only connect 1 program at a time to the mount.

Thanks in advance,

Cannot connect to mount but can connect to PMC-Eight network #ExploreStars #iEXOS-100

I had Explorestars working with my windows laptop via a wireless connection. However, whilst attempting to setup a serial connection using the Ascom Platform and PMC-Eight Configuration Manager, I can no longer use Explorestars. I also failed to make a serial connection and have disconnected the cable from both the laptop and the mount.

Using WiFi, the PMC-Eight Configuration Manager reports Current Mount Connection Method "UNKNOWN" Current WiFi Network "PMC-Eight FCA3" Nothing seems to work. Find Current Connection under How Fo You Want to Connect, just results in waiting, the other options are greyed out. None of the commands in Advanced work either. They all report error, no connection availabl, yet the PMC-Eight the recognised WiFi Link.

I have even tried installing Explorestars on another laptop which also recognises the PMC-Eight network, but that doesn't work either. It is as if a command has changed something in the mount, if such a thing is possible. I have even tried using the dongle and resetting. Any ideas please?

Hi Bob,

The current release version of the PMC-Eight ASCOM driver is fully compatible with platform version 6.5.  Future platform upgrades should never "break" previous versions of drivers that are out there. The platforms are backward compatible with previous platforms with the same major version number, 6 in this case. There was a break in compatibility (I believe) when the platform went from 5 to 6.

When we release new versions of the PMC-Eight ASCOM driver/server they will be tested against the latest version of the ASCOM platform.

It is important to note that the platform is not updated all that often, I think it has been at least 1 or 2 years since 6.4 was released.

It is important to run the Platform Diagnostics to verify that the installation is good prior to using the updated platform.
I would suggest that you re-install the PMC-Eight ASCOM Driver after installing the new ASCOM platform version.

We are currently working on the server version of the PMC-Eight ASCOM driver that will not require the use of the

Thanks Bill.  I actually put the APO in one of the Rigids.  The Stanley supports the misc gear.  Don’t know why I wrote the other way...Just getting old I guess.

Weather was great first night and I took some great milky way shots and a shot of Neowise.  Clouds and rain the last two nights so never broke out the APO.  Moving to a different spot tonight though.  Fingers crossed!

Beautiful shot Jenni!

I tried this target a week or so ago, but the only thing I had with a large enough fov was my 50mm APO guide scope.
ehhh, I didn't bother to post it :)
I didn't have a flattener in the train and the coma was staggering. Maybe I'll try to work up a different approach and give it another shot.
