Hi Paul,
with Wifi, you should select Ethernet in the options.

But first, make sure, that your Mac is connected with the PMC-8 Wifi.

Mirko

Ok so I've been able to save a profile using the default name only, and load it into the EKOS screen, and on that screen I have got the Nikon DSLR to connect. However ( screenshot attached ) there doesn't seem to be an option to connect to the EXOS-2 via WIFI, only Serial or Ethernet. Is the serial cable my only option?

AnonAstron had posted that he was able to connect via WIFI in Kstars via the INDIGO Server App, which I can also do with Stellarium, but not with Kstars.

Anone know how to setup Kstars to communicate with the INDIGO Server App as he described?

Thank you.

Hi All, thank you for your replies. My issue is more basic than using a serial cable at this point. Right now I just want to connect to my equipment in Kstars, using the WIFIi connection to the EXOS-2,  but I don't seem able to setup a profile in the Kstars EKOS wizard to do this. Attached is a screenshot of the Wizard, I enter my gear and hit Save, to save the profile, which then takes me to an "EKOS" screen where there is a pull down menu to load a profile, but my profile does not appear in that menu, it just says SIMULATORS.There is no error message that anything went wrong, any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you.

Alex,

strange, for me the normal cable worked with the IEXOS-100.

But for the EXOS-2 I followed these instructions

And Paul, If you like to use a cable connection from your Mac to the Mount, please remember that you have to switch the mount from wifi to serial mode. On a Mac you can do this with the Terminal. In Ekos you have also to define the connection settings (Screenshot attached). Sometimes it takes a while till the connection is established

Best regards,
Mirko

Mirko,

Thanks for the screenshot, I knew it was there but didn't have it in front of me, nor do I shoot Nikon.

My understanding of the IEXOS-100 is that the FTDI Serial component is built into the mount, therefore, when using a standard USB Mini to USB A cable. you have to invert the DTR on the mount itself. I had to.

Again, as I understand it,  the EXOS2 and others require an FTDI USB serial adapter. And i'm thinking you had to invert the DTR on that.

If i'm wrong about the EXOS2, my apologies, it is just what I've read from JH's comments.

Thanks,

Alex Z.

Hi Paul and Alex,

for Kstars / Ekos with INDI (Mac and RaspianPi) there is a possibility to select a Nikon DSLR. See Screenshot. I use a Mac and a Raspian Pi with different Nikon DSLR (Z6, D750)

For my PCM8-EXOS2 I have switched the DTR of the FTDI Chip, to use it with the RaspianPi. But as far as I remember it was not necessary for the IEXOS-100 and the USB Cabel.

Best regards,
Mirko

Well, I can't speak to Nikon support in Kstars, most DSLR support is there and works. But likely this is your problem with the IEXOS 100 mount and using an USB cable:

"For IEXOS 100 mount control using a serial USB mini connection (don't be confused, this is just a regular USB mini to USB A cable, not a special FTDI chipset or anything. The special chipset was built into the IEXOS-100 mount, you just need to flip a bit to make it work), you must install and run FT_Prog and then change/invert the DTR of the FTDI chipset."

You can get FT_Prog from here (you will need a windows PC to run this app):

hope this helps:

Hi AnonAstron, I was wondering if you could please post the exact setup steps you take to get Kstars to work with the INDIGO Server app. I am a beginner to all this. I have the INDIGO Server App up and running, controlling my EXOS-2 PMC-Eight mount over wifi, and it works with Stellarium, but I can't figure it out on Kstars so far.

Right now I'm using the AstroDSLR app from Cloudmakers.eu to take pictures using my Nikon D3200 DSLR to my MacBook Air, AstroDSLR seems to to load its' own Nikon INDI ( or Indigo, I'm confused sorry ) driver, but in the INDIGO Server App I don't see any Nikon DSLR driver listed as available, do you know how you would load it into INDIGO Server and where you would find it to do so?

I was hoping that Kstars /  Ekos would allow me to do everything within one package on the Mac, run my mount, let me capture from the Nikon to my hard drive, and also run guiding ( I just got a used Orion Starshoot autoguide camera and scope ) ..instead of using Explorestars under Parallels / Windows, PHD2 for guiding, and AstroDSLR for capture, but so far no luck. Any and all snippets of advice gratefully received. Thank you! Paul.

wrong mount type selection on explore stars /ipad

I have the explore stars app installed on my Ipad. I am not able to select my mount type (EXOS 2). The selection is fixed on G11 and the app does not allow to change this selection.

How can I solve?

Re: Can the Mount Saddle on the IEXOS-100 be Replaced #ExploreScientific

No issues there either Wes. The base of the ES azimuth adaptor is smaller than the well on the top of the CG4 tripod. I have had no apparent issues with the mount moving while in use. I may at some point (once I'm more proficient with a 3-D printer) print a close tolerance bushing to fill the gap.

How about mounting the mount onto the cg4 tripod.  Any mods needed to the tripod?  It did I read your note incorrectly about having the mount head on a cg4 tripod?

Jennifer,

Thank you for your response. The Mount has been stored in a pelican 1650 case along with the Pmc8. The case has not been exposed to rain but humidity is a different story.  Most of my Apo's : Stellarvue 80 and ES 127mm FCD100 have developed fungus on the triplet lens.( Even though they themselves were kept in custom made cases). Weather has not been very cooperative over here for the last 6 months so never had the opportunity to fully test it. Yesterday when I finally did manage to boot it up, well you know the res :(. The mount was working perfectly fine before but that weird ticking sound was noticed first before the squealing noise became apparent. The only thing I have noticed is that during balancing both RA and Dec axis seems to be stiffer than usual : something I noticed 8 months ago but the mount worked fine then. The only adjustment I did was to tighten the Azimuth Locking knob as I felt it was too loose. The wavy washer is also installed so that can be discounted as the issue. These are the things I have observed overall :
1) RA and Dec axis stiffness.
2)Azimuth "Adjustment" knobs seems to have a weird slipping issue : they seem to be very loose while adjusting(even with a 5 inch APO), especially during drift alignment proceedures.
3) Go to accuracy has always been questionable : This error might be more user related than mount but the mount almost always parks in the wrong position : the bubbles on the RA and Dec are not be centered. I use a workaround to avoid this issue.
4) The tick sound heard in the video occurs when most often when I am doing drift alignment procedure. Once I start imaging(SGP) , its gone.
5)  A lot of subs have been discarded by SGP because the the Dec corrections exceeded the specified limit in SGP( 20 px). 3 out of 5 frames are failing and SGP restarts the procedure.
6) THis is the first time I heard the squealing noise. THis was noticed only during "Parking" of the mount, no other time. WHen I park the mount from the meridian, this sound occurs. Rest of the time its perfectly fine.
7) Final point : the ticking sound seems to be coming from the RA motor where as the squealing seems to be coming from the saddle area.

Please let me know if you need any other info from my side.

Sunil:

Welcome back to the forum.  I have the same mount and I have not heard sounds like that before.  The squealing sound is the one I would be most concerned about. It sounds like parts are no longer lubricated and rubbing on each other.

You stated you had not used the mount in 8 months.  How did you have the mount stored? Was the mount inside or outside?  If the mount was outside was it exposed to humidity or rain?  If so you could have some rust.

Please describe what troubleshooting and/or inspections you have already done to determine the cause of the problems.  This way others may be able to chime in with some ideas and help you figure this out.

Thanks a lot for the bolt size and the hole spacing, Jeff.

I think I'll go with the TS Optics clamp as that one has a pair of smaller thumbscrews, so they should clear the DEC motor housing without the need of a coupling nut.

What did you need to put that head on the CG4 tripod?  Looks like it fit on just fine
