iEXOS-100 worm gear jamming/crunching? #FIRMWARE #iEXOS-100 #goto

Ran a slewing test on my iEXOS-100 last night (relating to my alignment issues in another thread).

Gears started to make an unpleasant crunching noise, so took off the plastic housing to see what was going on.

Hi all,
I am having a tough time using the new ASCOM 6.5 to control my PMC8 exos2 mount. It runs AOK using the old POTH routine, but I would like to get it running on the new ASCOM before the POTH goes down.
Is there any one here that can help me?

Matt:

1.  The iexos100 does have backlash adjustments.  There is a video somewhere, probably can find a link on the ES web site or perhaps someone can provide it.

2.  A few key points about how the mount works.

a.  The motors only know where they are because every movement made by the mount is kept track of in the firmware.  This means if you ever move the telescope with the clutches released, the mount firmware no longer knows where the mount is.
b.  Get your mount physically polar aligned.  This is a process that does not involve the telescope or motors if you are using the polar scope or tunnel.  Now you must return your telescope, by loosening the clutches and manually placing the scope, into the polar home position.  This position is one that has your scope approximately pointing at Polaris, preferably with a 45' offset from the center of the eyepiece.  Now is the time to power the mount.  At powerup the PMC8 assumes the telescope is pointing at polar home.
c.  The 2-3 star alignment can proceed and should be closer on the stars than you experienced.  However there is no sequential improvement to the alignment star positions...each star will have about the same error until the process is complete and Explorestars does the calculation for the virtual alignment.  At that point subsequent goto performance will be better
d.  Goto performance can be wrecked by mislevel in the east-west direction, I call this tilt.  Tip (north-south) is removed by the polar alignment.  In principle mislevel is accounted for in the 2-3 star alignment, buy in general I suggest you try to get the mount level before doing the alignment.
e.  If you have DEC home error, that is you have the scope twisted a bit off if the RA axis when you begin the 2-3 star alignment, this error is not removed by the 2-3 star alignment.  
f.  If the telescope is mounted on the saddle with a bit of tip, called cone error, this will affect your gotos.  This tip is not removed by the 2-3 star alignment.
g.  If you are using Explorestars with a 2-3 star alignment, you must understand the mount is being driven while in P (point) mode to maintain pointing despite polar alignment error.  For visual this is great.  But for photography it might not be great, as P mode does corrections 5 times per second.  For photography one needs to place the unit into T (track) mode.  In T mode the RA motor runs at sidereal rate exactly, while the DEC axis does not move.  If there is polar alignment error the object will drift on the field of view.  
h.  One way around some of this is to use short focal length telescopes.  
i.  Also be sure to use the SYNC button once you center your scope on a desired object.  Explorestars takes this to be the correct position and uses this knowledge to point the scope subsequently.  The result is that most. if not all, of the PA error etxc is removed FOR A POSITION NEAR WHERE THE SYNC WAS DONE.   So gotos to nearby objects should be good.

These points will help I think.

Hi, at present I reasonably polar align using the IEXOS100 Polar Scope but accept it only gives a "rough alignment" however I do manage at least 2 minute exposures without trailing. However I do also 3 star align rather than 2 which does improve slewing accuracy.
Obviously also the longer your focal length the narrower the FOV which does often mean your target is or can be outside of your live camera view. To help on this I do recommend a red dot finder scope.

I had exactly the same problem as you did so I selected Pleiades in ExploreStars, the slew was way off but then respositioned by hand and then pressed the 'T' buttons. This was a 30 sec exposure, seems to track well enough. First ever shot at the stars. I expect if I wanted longer exposures, I had better get a better polar alignment. I think the polar alignment just aligns the mount and lets the electronics know where it is. The telescope is quite separate until you move it and sync it with something. "Way off" is something one hears often for the first slew or two, but tracking works well enough. Have a go.

Think I had exactly the same issue when I recently got my iExos-100.

You have to be able to plug the mount into a PC/Mac, run the config program and then switch the "Connection" option back to UDP. Then it will (should) get picked up by the ExploreStars app straight away. 

You *might* be able to still do that if you can connect wirelessly to the mount's local wi-fi from a laptop. If the config program can see your mount over wi-fi then you might still be able switch it back to UDP.

However, if you can't plug the mini-USB in then I think you're stuck until the new part arrives.

Hello,

Pretty new to astrophotography but many years experience in regular photography. Very steep learning curve this year has taken me from a regular DSLR/lens/tripod and shooting at high ISO to minimise star trail, to the IEXOS-100 goto mount, Sky-watcher Startravel 102mm scope lens and multi-minute exposures with lights, darks and stacking.

Tried out the mount a few days ago and noticed two pretty fundamental issues (I think), which I'd appreciate advice on.

First up, when I was positioning the mount for polar alignment I noticed it was quite wobbly on both the right asc and dec axis. Definitely some visible play when I put a little bit of pressure on the mount. Presume there must be some gears and cogs that can be tightened up to remove that level of play. Any pointers on where and how would be great.

And then after polar aligning (roughly but still relatively accurately) I did a two star alignment test. However, the mount was way off in its initial auto alignment. And when I say "way off" I mean I tried to align at Vega but the scope was pointing closer to Mizar/Alioth. I did a manual adjustment to get it pointing at the correct star but then when I did a goto test to Andromeda galaxy it wasn't even slightly close. It ended up pointing me somewhere closer to Capella!

Entirely willing to accept this is down to user error. I checked my lat/long coordinates and they're correct. As mentioned, the scope was pretty closely polar aligned (yes, I could have been more accurate but the margin of error wasn't enough to account for the error in the goto pointing).

So first up I'm wondering if the axis wobble and the poor alignment are related. Is the mount thinking it's tracking to the right point in the sky but there's so much wobble and slip that the gears don't actually turn the mount far enough? Or is is a software issue, or maybe I've just entered the wrong details, so the scope thinks I'm in a completely difference place in the world?

Secondly, if I can't get the goto bit working properly can I still just use the mount to track "dumb" and follow the celestial object that way, assuming I'm more accurate in my initial polar alignment?

Any advice for a newbie would be well received.

SW 100ED, not sure why mine came out with the green tint, I can force it to go red but green is what it wants to be. That image was with the L-eNhance filter and using APP to process the Ha-OIII into a color RBG image. Also tried separating the Ha and OIII plus a mono for Luminence, same colors. Ended up with 42 x 240s, 139G, 21Offset and -15C, 30 darks, 20 flats and 20 dark flats.
