The mount has about 30 arc seconds of periodic error which will cause your stars to smear.  The period is 600 seconds, and thus 30-60 seconds is all you can expect, especially at 1000mm FL.  Get yourself a guide scope and you will be fine.  The exos 2 can take it.  BTW the belts don't need to be tightened in all likelihood.  Read over Bob Hoskins paper on tuning, located in the files section of mounts (or main) subgroup.  Not sure where.  It explains some of the adjustments that are appropriate if you are interested.

But guide that puppy.

Wes.

Hi guys,

thanks for sharing all that awesome shots! Thats a great motivation for beginners like me. I got a exos2 with pmc-eight for christmas and had finally the first clear nights for testing the rig.

The telescope I am using is a explore scientific ar152 with 988mm focal length. I guess its on the upper side on the load this mount can handle, but its the only available for photography I have right now. I use a stock sony a6000 camera. I dont have a field flattener. also no guiding yet.

I chose the orion nebula as an easy target to start with. Here is the image data in compact form:

Mount: Explore Scientific PMC8 EXO2
Telescope: explore scientific ar152
Focal lenght: 988 mm
Camera: Stock Sony A6000
ISO: 640
Exposure time: 350x10s

I only used bias and flats for image processing in siril

this is my result:

I noticed, that the stars are quite big in the blue channel. I guess this is where you notice its an achromat instead of an apochromat refractor. I recently noticed a video from astrobackyard. He processes rgb images from dslrs in each channel separately. In that why you can shrink the stars in the blue channel to the correct size.
In the actual 16bit tiff image the three stars in the nebula core are very distinct. In the jpg this detail information is lost a little bit.

Exposures of 30s also work quite well for me with this heavy telescope on that little mount. I get problems above though. I'm not sure if it is polar alignment. I think no, because the star trails change direction in each image. I will try to tighten the belts, but maybe thats just the load limit of the mount.

cheers and clear skies!
Lukas

Hi Dallin,

I guess Doug asked the right question: do you want to connect via wifi or serial? both at the same time is not possible. also with esrial you have to you ascom instead of the explorestars app.

My guess is, that you actually want to use the explorestars app via wifi.

To check if you are affected by the mentioned connection issue please check your current ip-settings via command line:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPkoX0rxIxY
Important are the settings of your wifi controller.

if yes, follow the steps of the following video to set a static ip-adress properly:

Also, make sure everything is connected BEFORE powering up the PMC8.  If you connect the serial cable to an already powered on mount, it won't do anything.

I also find the main connection page to be cryptic and unhelpful.  Go to the advanced tab.

Under communication method, click TCP then click the "version (ESGv!)" Button.

The mount should reply with *HELLO*ESXO!.
Switch to Serial and click version again. It will have no response.

Now click back to TCP and the Wired/Wireless toggle.
Now Version + TCP will respond with just *HELLO* and Version + serial will respond with a long version number.

Provided you got that long version number back, you should now be good to go for serial control

Hi Dalin,
On my setup I usually have the COM port set to COM3. That might help in this case.

Re: Polar Alignment Scope - EXOS2-GT PMC-Eight

Terry

Found a simpler method for anyone struggling, this is still not going to be as accurate as plate solving with Sharpcap, Polemaster or iPolar but it should get you close enough thanks to Jeffrey but with a little added for us novices
http://fornaxmounts.com/media/wysiwyg/fornax/manuals/FMPS-10-manual.pdf

If you're struggling to see Kochab (which could be easy if you're in a Bortle 4/5 + zone) you can also use an app such as Polefinder for android, I set the reticle in the app to be the same as my Sky Watcher, using that app it will use your GPS location and current time to show where Polaris should be on a circle in the reticle, this circle represents a clock so for example if it shows polaris to be at 3 O'clock then position the 40 60 deg line which has the hole where you place Polaris at 3 O'clock by rotating the RA axis of the mount then simply adjust your Alt and Az mount screws to get Polaris into the hole on the line

Many thanks, that looks far easier and will get me started before I begin to mess around with Sharpcap plate solving and having to take my laptop out in the field

there is a bug in Win 10 causing an incompatibility with out of the box settings.

before connecting to the mount
Right click on the wifi icon from the tray->open network & internet settings
select Wi-Fi then Manage Known Networks
select the PMC8 network
under IP settings, click edit
change to Manual
IPv4 On
IP address 192.167.47.11

Thank you Jerry,

let me explain my situation. I really wanted this mount but it was not in stock and it will not be in stock till May-June(checked with ES Aria Boroojeni - Customer Service).

But suddenly there was one available at FLO UK as a return from the customer. So I contacted FLO they tested it and it was working so I took the risk and bought it. I'm in EU Slovakia.

FLO - 700EUR

CUSTOMS - 200EUR(non refundable)

I have contacted FLO about this and they said that the reason for the return was the same problem I have now. But because it was working in FLO they thought it is OK.

Now I want to fix the problem here if I can because I don't want to deal with the customs again. I would have to pay the fees anyway even if it's an RMA claim. (less but still)

So I can't return the mount because of the nonrefundable 200EUR customs tax+fee.

I don't want to go straight to RMA because of additional costs. I would do so only if you say that there is nothing I can do here.

Another option is to send it to Bresser in Germany but who would cover the cost? I'm also waiting for the answer from FLO because they have contacted Bresser already.

Hi Wes,

I have some experience, I was a IT technician for a "fruit" company few years ago so I think I can do it.

I understand the whole process of setting the parameters, I was doing that when it happens. I did factory reset and then setting parameters when I lost connection and after reboot there was no SSID to find anymore.

What I don't understand is:

1. Pull the test point TP_IO9 ? Like pull it UP? Or connect it by alligator to TP_GND?
2. Where is the reset test point?

I was reading your posts but you never said exactly how to do it, if you don't want to post it here just send me an email.

some informations here that I have been reading:
https://microchipsupport.force.com/s/article/How-can-factory-defaults-be-restored-to-the-RN171-RN131-module

Jerry was talking about it here:
https://espmc-eight.groups.io/g/MAIN/message/2087?p=,,,20,0,0,0::Created,,alligator,20,2,0,28835885

Almost same issue like mine:
https://espmc-eight.groups.io/g/MAIN/topic/75158547#

I'm also confused of the behavior of the serial port.
