Hi All,

Just FYI, I also power my mount (iExos100) from the ASIair Pro, as well as 2 dew heat strips which are controlled by the Air. What I believe ZWO does NOT recommend is powering the cooling function of a camera from the Air.

Morning,

Thanks Paul for the schematic, it is very helpful, might be worth storing it in files along with the process for installing ASIair Pro
Just a small point, you're powering the mount from the ASIair?

Anyhows, just to let this small group know, received my new serial to USB cable WITH an FTDI chipset, followed the procedure and YES! it works.
Well I can move the mount, not tried anything else yet :)

Thanks to all for support and help

Hi Wes,

The one thing about this hobby is it keeps you on your toes, I have learned so much and me in my twilight years.

I think I pretty much worked out that even tho it says serial it must have an FDTI chip, it looks like it has a chipset from the outside but looks can be deceiving!

Earlier I ordered a DTECH version which states it has a FTDI chip from Amazon, so glad that you endorse that.

A slight aside, re drivers in Windows, is there a way of finding a list of loaded drivers in W10? I am pretty sure I down loaded the driver from FTDI but how do you check?

Many thanks
Alan

Well the prolific chip set has had issues I know. Jerry has stated the correct chip set to use is the FTDI.  My guess is the programming if the pin on the prolific didn’t work.  Try to get a cable with the Ftdi and see what you can accomplish.

The hobby is indeed one full of nooks and crannies.  And it can sure suck down some money.

I bought the DTECH 10 ft usb to serial ftdi cable from Amazon.   I don’t use the asiair so can’t say how it might work with that.   It works like a charm in myPMC8 with windows.

If you are using windows you can download an ftdi driver from parallax web site.  See if that driver recognizes your usb to serial. It won’t if it’s a prolific.

Hi Wes,

thanks for the quick response.

The trouble is I am a Mac user, and windows is just so complicated, I have spent hours trying to get to the bottom of this, why cant the PMC8 just have a USB connection?
I have done as you asked and under device manager I have PORTS (COM & LPT) followed by Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port (COM4) is this correct?

I have checked for updates and Windows tells me I have the best driver, however the FTDI programmer cannot find the chipset (if there is one) when I do a scan under devices.
This cable works fine for connecting to ascom (Poth) and driving the scope around via CDC

This is doing my head in as I have read all the info on this forum in preparation to make sure I was heading in the right direction before I bought the ASIair pro, the guidance and the procedure on the files seems excellent

This hobby has more Cul de Sacs than you can shake a stick at in addition to the amount of money I've thrown at it......small steps I know :)

You have too k ow if you have a usb to serial converter cable.

1.  Do not plug it into the pmc8
2. Plug it into a pc
3.  Open the device manager.  See if it is listed there as a comm port or usb to serial. If not it is not a converter or you have not loaded a driver for it.  Check for that

I bought a great cable for 15$ so it is not impossible that your 12$ cable is an ftdi cable. But you should be able to tell as it will need to have a back shell over the DB9 connector inside of which is the chipset. Many have an led that lights when the thing is plugged into the computer.

Hi,

I am in a similar situation, so I tracked through the various messages and ended up with Marco's procedure in the files section for connecting my Exos 2 to ASIAIR Pro. Its very good even for the layman like me!

I already had a serial to usb cable as I have been running with a wired connection so, came to re programming the chip, downloaded the programme and scanned for devices and nothing.

Is it likely that having bought the cable from Amazon that it does not have a chipset but just looks like one? ( I paid about $12 UK £10)

I have been on a specialist site which sells them for about $30 and they are manufactured by FTDI.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Alan

Re: Both axis tracking with ASCOM driver #iEXOS-100 #ASCOM

Jerry Hubbell - Explore Scientific VP Engineering

Hi Martin,

As you have learned, the ExploreStars program has two modes of operation, POINT mode and TRACK mode. POINT mode uses the mount's alignment model to continuously calculate the current position of the target object and makes "micro slews" to the position based on the corrected motor counts provided by the model. The ExploreStars application does this 5 times per second. The resulting behavior is that the effective rate in RA and in DEC is dynamically adjusted to keep the object in the center of the eyepiece.

The further the physical alignment of the mount is away from the true north or south celestial pole, the larger the rate value is in DEC due to the declination drift that occurs. This is what the mount model corrects.  The ASCOM driver does not currently use a mount model and assumes that the mount is physically aligned to the  north or south celestial pole. Therefore, all that is required is for ASCOM to provide a nominally fixed Sidereal tracking rate where the DEC axis is not driven. There are always slight corrections needed due to Periodic Error and small amounts of offset from the pole causing declination drift, so an autoguiding system is used to correct those errors to get virtually perfectly round stars in your image.

I hope this helps you understand how this works.

Hi,
I found a tracking mode in ExploreStars app that tracks stars using both axis. I would like to ask if it is possible to enable both axis for tracking using the ASCOM driver.
Thank you for any answers.
