Release of 20A01 minor revision for Indi Users (All can load) #FIRMWARE

Wes Mcdonald

Folks:

Jerry has updated the release of the new universal firmware in response to a late breaking issue discovered by two of our beta testers who use the Indi driver.  The issue primarily affected Indi users, although users of the Windows driver could, under unusual use case, experience it.

If you are using the Indi driver, please wait to upgrade your firmware until the Indi community has published their updates to their driver which we hope would be soon.  We know that such an update is being worked on by the Beta testers.

We recommend all users reload the firmware from the just posted release (as of 8:30 EDT, 4/13/2021) if they have previously loaded the prior posted firmware.  The correct firmware will display a date of 2021.04.13 as part of the version code in the splash screen.

Thanks to all the beta testers for their efforts, they were instrumental in getting to this point where the code is releasable.

As of this note the Beta Test Group will be locked for further postings.  Henceforth, all users are encouraged to post issues as they may arise to the forum.

Regards,
Wes

Hi jerry
My exos2 pmc 8 preforms exceptionally well. I removed the tripod legs and mounted the head to a fixed pier.

New PMC-Eight Firmware UPDATED STATUS #ExploreScientific #UniversalFirmware

Jerry Hubbell - Explore Scientific VP Engineering

My plans were to release to the general public the new universal version of the PMC-Eight firmware (ver 20A01) late yesterday evening. I have been delayed until today making final tweaks to the installation guide. For those that have been waiting for the new firmware, ASCOM driver, and Universal Firmware Configuration Tool (UFCT), I wanted to assure you that it will be available later today, probably within a couple of hours. I know that we have been talking about this for a couple of months now, and it has actually been under active development and testing for 6 months now so I appreciate everyone's patience. It is finally ready. I think you all will really be happy with the changes and the updated functionality.

I will be posting new messages once it is available for download on the main forum.

Thanks again for everyone's support!

I've been testing out the ASI 2400 and the ED127CF. The sensor is yuge!  This is very cropped image represents 1 hour of five minute exposures at a gain of 0 and offset of 30 with a CLS filter from my backyard in the suburbs of Atlanta.  Not really a galaxy scope, but I'm pleased with the results overall.  The image scale on this combination is 1.29 arcseconds per pixel.

I own the iexos-100, and a Nikon Z6 with a 400mm f/6.3 camera lens, and use APT to control both. I have yet to master polar alignment on this mount, and thus can manage decent pics of Orion. I am looking for better tools. I have a $1500 budget for a dedicated scope similar to a WO 61II or Evostar 72ED with , field flattener, auto finder scope, and auto-focuser. Any knowledge and experience will help?

Rather than a work around to get past Windows App Store constraints, consider running an Android emulator like Bluestacks and use the Android version of the app on Windows.

After more futzing around with it, I did finally manage to get it to work. It required first formatting the card from the fire tablet, ejecting it, then adding the files from my laptop running windows.

I have tried following the step-by-step instructions for Android, with no luck. Including the step of going to the download link and installing the android app after installing the files on the external card (including granting it permissions before launching)

My fire hd 8 plus tablet is running Fire OS 7.3.1.8

Hi Jake, Yes, I was able to use my Fire HD tablet very successfully with ExploreStars. It is a little finicky to set up, but when completed, worked well. I also am a Mac User. I also loaded ExploreStars on my iPad, and this works even better, as the entire database/files all load together from the App Store. However, I have since converted my mount using a serial connection, and no longer use ExploreStars or the Fire Tablet. I see Tyler has sent you some great info to get you going.

It looks like the database isnt being loaded in the picture files.

here is a step by step guide that should help.

Installation: (to install updates, start with step 5)

  1. Download the Database and Images: ExploreStars.zip 90 MB (DB 2.3[85643])
  2. Unzip and install the files to your MicroSD card. The resulting file structure should look like this:
  3. Install the MicroSD card in your Android tablet
  4. Under Settings/APPS/ExploreStars grant Permissions for External Storage and Location.
  5. Using a web browser on your Android, navigate to this webpage and download the APK file: ES_Android.1.16.zip 16 MB (8/5/2019 v.1.3.19217.453 DB 2.3[85643]
  6. Once the file is downloaded, open the file/install the App
  7. The first time you run the App, you will need to initialize the settings:
    1. Open the Settings screen from the Menu
    2. Tap Load GPS Coordinates
    3. To make sure that the correct Mount info is loaded, select a Scope Type DIFFERENT from your actual mount
    4. Tap the Home button to load the settings.
    5. Return to the Settings screen, select the correct Scope Type from the list, and tap the Home button again to save the settings.
    6. Close the App
  8. Connect to the PMC-Eight network and restart ExploreStars

here is a higher quality image of the error

Amazon Fire OS issues with Goto DB

Jake Carroll

Has anyone been able to get a Fire OS tablet to work successfully? I keep getting the error shown attached when launching the app. I have installed the files to the external microsd card, verified permissions, etc. I have also tried installing the app from the Amazon store and installing via the direct link for android version. Nothing I have tried works.
This is on a brand new Amazon Fire 8HD plus running the latest Fire OS. I installed the files onto the external microSD card using a macbook pro running Windows 10 via bootcamp. I don’t see a way to rearrange the sequence of the files on the root folder of the SD card, no matter what order I add them in the Images folder appears first, sql file second. That may just be my list view is alphabetical of course. But I have tried copying them in order and that didn’t make a difference.
Appreciate any help or guidance so I can start using my mount.

Hi Martin,

Unfortunately, the Windows ExploreStars was developed as a Windows 8 "Metro" app and is only available in the Windows Store. There is no executable setup program like a normal desktop program.
