Re: Non-Messier objects in ExploreStars #EXOS2 #ExploreStars

Paul Meesters

Hi,

My mistake, the longitude and latitude info was incorrect for my location :( Hence it didn't show the Slew To button.

However, IC 1805 (the heart nebula according to Stellarium) returns the Cassiopeia Objects Group. Not the Heart nebula. This object type is "Open cluster"  not "Nebula"
NGC 1795 returns the Dorado objects group.. Not the nebula..

I'm confused ..

Thanks,
Paul

I would certainly think you'd be fine opening the inspection door.  Its a simple clip in piece of plastic, no tools necessary.  You'll at least get a quick look inside.   Once you have a visual confirmation on what is slipping, hopefully support can advise you on the proper steps.  My guess is that it will mirror what Robert suggested, but you may want to wait to hear it straight from them.

Good luck,
-Tony

You can search by the NGC #.

In the case of the Heart Nebula, it would be NGC 1795 or you can try IC 1805. Most objects in the sky have different identifiers. Some objects will also come up if you just search "heart" (without the "").

Clear skies.

Non-Messier objects in ExploreStars #EXOS2 #ExploreStars

Paul Meesters

Hi,

Can someone explain to me how to find and use non-messier objects in the ExploreStars application ?
I can't find a way to, for instance, find the Heart nebula and slew to it..

I thought this app contained 10.000 objects to GoTo ?
But in stead I only can find some Messier objects.. what gives ?

Thanks,
Paul

Re: PHD2 stopped talking to my mount #EXOS2 #OpenGOTO #pmc-eight #ASCOM

OK. I ordered one that specifically states it is the FTDI version. Should be here tomorrow. That still doesn't explain why it works with ASCOM but not PHD2. Especially if PHD2 is using ASCOM as a proxy to talk to the mount. Just a thought.

Thanks

James,

Yup.  That cable uses a Prolific chipset, not FTDI.

Unless something changed (Wes?  Jerry?), Prolific's were specifically not recommended for this application, in more than one post.

That cable seems to have the Prolific PL2303 chip. You should get a cable with FTDI chip. My first cable also had the Prolific chip and did not work.

Robert,

This is what I have.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B083QWL13V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would assume that whatever this cable has is adequate as I can control the mount with the ASCOM tools. The issue appears to be more with how PHD2 is interacting with ASCOM. I don't think this is a hardware/cable issue. I can get one that specifically states that it has this FTDI chip, but I not convinced it would make a difference.

Thanks

OK, try this ;)

start everything up. In POTH unpark then click on the traffic button. Then do the manual guiding from PHD2. Do you see the commands showing up in the traffic log? When you click the East button 2 or 3 times do you see RA move by 1 second in POTH? Increase the guide pulse duration to 5000, then every click on East should move 2-3 seconds in RA.

N.b. I also notedthat if you use the manual guiding buttons in PHD2 it puts the scope in tracking mode, but this is NOT indicated in POTH (the checkbox does not turn on). However, when you first come out of park, the alt-az are stable and RA-Dec are moving, as you would expect. But as soon as you send a guide pulse, RA-Dec stabilize and Alt-Az start moving. This is all as expected, since guiding without tracking is nonsense. It caught me as unusual becasuse the "Track" checkbox in POTH didn't activate.

My account on the laptop is an admin account so I shouldn't need to run the apps with elevated rights, but I can certainly give it a shot. I am using the latest "any-cpu" version of the PMC8 ASCOM driver.

James,

One small checkbox item:

Jerry said:  "the PMC-Eight in Serial Mode with a Serial DB9 to USB FTDI chip adapter cable"

And you said: "I have both a serial (DB9) cable and a serial (ST4) cable I can use."

Question:
Does the serial-to-USB cable that you are using have the FTDI chip?

Re: PHD2 stopped talking to my mount #EXOS2 #OpenGOTO #pmc-eight #ASCOM

The third screen shot in post 8515 shows the mount is connected, but the camera is not connected.  I am not sure if it makes a difference or not, but have you tried connecting the camera and the mount at the same time and the tried moving the mount in PHD2?

What is your procedure for connecting the mount?  Are you first connecting to POTH then connecting to POTH In PHD2?

Have you tried running ALL of your astronomy programs in Admin mode? If not, it may be worth a shot.

Which ASCOM driver are you using for the PMC-8?  Is it the Any-CPU version?

Sincerely,

Jennifer Shelly

Re: Dec axis motor system faulty or newbie error?? #EXOS2

Paul,

If the DEC axis stays put when the clutch is on, then the clutch isn't slipping and neither is the mesh between the worm and ring gears.
If you open the belt cover and the belt is moving, but the axis isn't, then I would think that the most likely cause would be a loose setscrew on the large pulley.
Easy to check and service if you remove the DEC motor cover, not much to it.  Notes below :-)
