Fellas:

A few things come to mind while I was reading this discussion:

1) Has anyone compared connectivity separately for the
  a) 2.4 Gig band?
  b) 5.0 Gig band?

2) Have the FTDI COM port drivers been installed on Windows?

3) Have Windows updates been recently installed?  The updates can wreak havoc.

Please disregard if all of the above have been confirmed/addressed.

Marko

I don’t think you or should have an IPv6 address when connected to the pmc8. This is what is likely going on.  I have to research this some.  Something is amiss here.

Peter, once you switched to serial the CM was happy, and the issue with the WiFi that kept things from working with your new laptop did not bother the cm.

Marko, please load the beta CM version 1.04 and see if that helps.  It handles WiFi connections a bit differently.

Peter:  I bet that if you switch back to WiFi your problem with the new laptop will return.  I expect your laptop might have the same issue as Marko.  You might also try using the beta version of the cm.

If anyone out there knows how to tell windows to use IPv4 that would be helpful.

Re: One beginner's guide to getting EXOS2/PMC8 fully operational with ASCOM, Stellarium, SharpCap, ASPS, and ASCOMPAD

Marko Pola

Hello,

Just got my exos2 mount with PMC-8 and I've been up all night troubleshooting a similar problem that voyager reported with my wireless connection between a laptop and PMC-8.

My ipad connects to the mount with explorestars app without any issues.

I'm trying to connect my windows 10 laptop to PMC-8 to switch to serial mode (with future plans to connect to my asi-air). I have been unable to make the connection to PMC-8 via wifi on my laptop I've seen this as a recurring topic all over the forums but have yet to see a solution apart from users switching to a different laptop and then everything works. Well I don't have another laptop to switch to so I'm trying to figure out how to fix the connection. This is my first time trying to make a connection via PC so I've never had a successful connection prior to this.

I've followed all the troubleshooting steps that Wes outlined for Voyager.

1. I connect to my PMC-Eight-02 network and enter password. Network connection established. The PMC-8 indicator LEDs read: The flashing RED LED (5) stops flashing indicating that my laptop has connected to SSID. But the GREEN LED (4) is flashing slow indicating the module is waiting on a connection.

2. I plug in my Serial cable (with FTDI chipset).

3. Boot the ES configuration manager

4. Drop down the connection tab.

5. Set mount type to EXOS2

7. Press Find Button. Information pop up states that PMC-8 is connected on com port: COM3

8. Select com port com3

9. Click “Do It” next to Find Current Connection. Receive message: “this mount does not appear to be connected. Please check your settings and network connection”

10. All other “Do It” buttons are not available.

11. Bottom status bar shows Red (none) for current mount connection method and Green (PMC-Eight-02) for current wifi network.

I was able to download and install the latest firmware to my PMC-8 using the configuration manager so I know that my serial cable is working.

Also I attempted to run the PC Explorestars app and I receive the "Please wait" message and unable to get the manual slew controls working there.

I attempted to enter commands (ESGp0!, ESGv!, ESX! )on the advanced screen using both the TCP and UDP methods and I receive an Error message “an error has occurred. Unable to send command”. I also attempted to enter commands using the serial method and I just receive an empty response that says “Received:        “

So after reviewing similar issues others have reported, I think it must be an issue with my laptop communicating to the PMC-8 via wifi. I turned off my firewall as suggested and restarted my computer and rebooted the pmc-8 and the same problems still exist.

I also ran a connection test using the other PMC-8 Utility with no success.

I ran the windows network diagnostics troubleshooter and I received a message “wi-fi” does not have a valid IP configuration" See attached photos of my wifi configuration. Does anyone else have any other ideas or troubleshooting steps I should try?

(FYI: i turned off the firewall after taking this screenshot but that didn't fix the connection problem)

Hello all,
@wes: no did not change my computer when loading the new software. Stuck with the new laptop which I picked for my  astro imaging hobby :).  Agree, PMC8 appears to be rock steady. 👍

@jr very interesting scenario: once I found the PMC8 interface utility and got it up and running, the clue to the new laptop having some hardware issue was that, when I ran the COM interface tester, I kept getting the message :"COMn not found".  This indicated that I some sort of hardware interface issue was with the com ports, also indicated by  @Wes. At this point I changed the laptop and CM immediately connected and switched to the serial interface and all worked. 👍

But here is the interesting part. I shut down the old laptop and brought up the new laptop and connected the serial cable. CM immediately recognized the serial connection with the "Do It Serial" on the new laptop -  with no no config/driver  changes .

I've been tracking Venus for 10 hrs using POTH/Stellarium via serial on the new laptop for some 10hrs and all looks good.

It's all a great voyage and now am a lot more savvy.

@mario, great idea to consolidate this info into a "How To" doc 👍!

Now I think the experts are puzzled about getting the serial going again on the  new laptop! - so am I !😊

Thank you all,
Peter

I'm happy to complete the documentation/PDF/posting etc....but are the steps correct? Any updates/feedback that needs to be added?

HaHa.

The thing to remember is always that the PMC8 is the last place to suspect.  Compared to every other computer or computer software that we use it is the simplest machine and the least likely to be Borked.  And there are tons of thiem out there and they are all trouble free.  Thus its always the PC or some software on it.

Prime suspect is a firewall.  The new Windows firewall prevents UDP apparently.  So if you are having huge connection problems, turn off Windows firewall and see do all the problems go away.  As you are not on the Internet this is not hazzard.  If it works then you know the firewall was doing you in.

Glad it works now Peter.

Howdy,

OK, now you have to figure out why the new laptop is not connecting since it did previously.  Perhaps you can

compare your new laptop settings and old settings to see if you see a difference.

Hello JR,
responses to your questions on current state:

need to get a baseline for where you are currently:

1.       Your IPad connects via wireless to the mount?

>> Correct

2.       Your Windows PC cannot connect to the mount via wireless or serial?
>> Correct

3.       What state was your mount in previously; wireless or serial?
>> was working in serial mode prior to switching to wireless after firmware upgrade

4.       What happens when you click the Find it connection?
>> as shown in screen print above,
>> “Find” results in the “Com 4” response
>> “Find current connect ‘Do it’ “ returns second message

>> “The Mount does not appear to be connected...”

I will be trying out the rest of your recommendations in a few hours.

thank you for your support.
