Re: Explore Scientific EXOS-2 PMC-Eight GOTO Mount illuminated polar alignment + 90 degree polar alignment

Nick,

Yes, there are two batteries - little button cells. Mine are LR41's.  Lost one checking this.  No idea where the little dickens flew off to.  :-))

Just keep unscrewing the post, it's all in there.  Watch for stuff dropping out (the LED and its mount are tiny!), and you may need a magnet to pull all the bits out.

Ergonomics?  Well, yes - can't imagine why anyone who ever tried a polar scope (particularly in light-polluted skies) would ever want one again.  I'm at ~43 degrees, and my old LXD55 settled that for me!  I've never used the one on my EXOS2.

If you're budget-constrained, do some searches on what the iExos-100 crowd did.  Their mount comes with a 'tunnel', and while the mount was perfectly fine for AP, that was a weak spot.  Phone apps, drift alignment, compass-and-offset, marking tripod spots for a predetermined alignment...  They were pretty creative, but it was worth it for them.

You didn't say whether you're primarily visual or AP.  For visual, rough PA is probably fine.  For AP, you'd want better, see above.

I went for Sharpcap PA right off, as I knew I'd need to guide.  The license is inexpensive and it leverages the guiding gear you already need for AP. If you do decide to get a guidescope and camera, take a look at the Altairs.  They're UK based, and the cameras, at least, are cheaper here in Canada than the ZWO's - I assume the same for you as well.  YMMV.

Hope this helps!

- Bob

Re: Explore Scientific EXOS-2 PMC-Eight GOTO Mount illuminated polar alignment + 90 degree polar alignment

Mike Hammer

The polar illuminator unscrews (counterclockwise) in the middle. Inside are the batteries in a small tube. There is probably an insulator preventing the batteries from making contact. Carefully remove it (don’t lose the batteries or the insulator, they are tiny) and reassemble. It should work then.

To improve access to the polar illuminator eyepiece, you need to raise the tripod by extending the legs. When done doing this, make sure that the tripod is level using the bubble located on the top of the tripod. Adjust as needed.

Hi all

Recently purchased above mount, can anyone confirm if the reticule in the polar alignment scope should be illuminated, I can turn the small knob and I can hear a switch made but no illumination, what am I missing, retailer I bought from not sure, is there a battery somewhere?
Plus I am having great trouble polar aligning. I am at 53 degrees latitude here in NW UK its virtually impossible without lying on the floor to get an eyeball to the polar scope viewing lense, are there any simple solutions i.e a 90 degree prism device I can attach, I am aware of Polemaster and Sharpcap but don't want to shell out another 2-3 hundred pounds, any thoughts/help??

I'm very interested in this too. I use my iEXOS-100 exclusively with my ASIAIR Pro, and I would love to be able to incorporate SkySafari with it.

Thanks

Hi Jeff,

Welcome to the forum, thank you for your iEXOS 100 purchase.
I did a quick search for ASIAIR on the MAIN forum and found 140 messages that mentioned it.

https://espmc-eight.groups.io/g/MAIN/search?q=asiair

I think you will find that several customers have had very good success using the ASIAIR with the PMC-Eight systems.

Thanks Jennifer, rolling back to 6.4 did the trick.

Stellarium integration with APT was never an issue. I'm using port 8090 and have no problems.

Latest version of stellarium doesn't need Stellarium scope, it has the functionality built in.

I am familiar with APT, but I have not upgraded to the new ASCOM Platform.  I am still using the old way as you described.  The only thing you did not mention was Stellarium Scope which allows Stellarium to sync with APT.  Are you using Stellarium Scope?  Have you enabled Telescope Control and Remote Control in Stellarium?  What port number do you use in APT for Stellarium?   The default is usually 8090, but APT does not seem to like it.  I suggest changing it to 8093.  I apologize for having more questions than answers, but hopefully we will get you up and running.

The same happens with NINA. If device hub connected to nothing, it works fine, and is stable. if connected to NINA, it keeps disconnecting. I know Kent is looking into this as he has experienced the same thing. I rolled back.

Thanks for taking a look, Jerry.

Uninstalling 6.5 and installing 6.4 did the trick.

Using POTH under 6.5 didn't work for me, but others results may be different.

Looking forward to the completion of your solution. If you need a beta tester I'd be happy to help...

I would suggest that if you are having problems with specific applications on the new ASCOM 6.5 platform, that you report it to the Application developer and also to the ASCOM-Standards developers. There is an ASCOM Platform Groups.io forum where you can report these issues and discuss them at:

https://ascomtalk.groups.io/g/Help

I am not going to pursue this myself as we are currently actively working on our PMC-Eight ASCOM Server that we will be releasing soon.
This will do away with the need to use POTH or the Device Hub. In the meantime,

I suggest that anyone wanting to use the new ASCOM platform 6.5 that you select POTH when you download the platform in the list of components to download. This is not automatically selected since it has been deprecated in this new platform version, but it is still available to select and install.

Re: Slewing behavior: POTH Hub vs Device Hub #ASCOM #iEXOS-100

Bob Trepiccione

Hi Jerry,

It seems that AST is the only one that seems to have this issue that I have found.

Sharpcap, backyard Eos, and Stellarium seem to function normally with both.

There does appear to be somewhat of a lag between button "push" and mount movement with POTH vs Device Hub.  Device hub seems more responsive.

I am connected via WiFi, but I've tried it with a serial connection and the lag is there regardless of connection method.

So maybe it's just an issue with AST itself,  but ASCOMPAD doesn't function with the device hub either. That may just come with the territory, though.

I came to this conclusion while trying to use an Xbox controller for slewing...got it to work with POTH, no go with device hub.

I've attached a pic of the actual message that AST returns...

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your report... This post is very relevant.  So if I can summarize, it appears that the Device Hub does not work the same as the POTH and is in fact, not operational as the POTH as it triggers an exception in AST. Have you tried it with any other ASCOM client program?

Slewing behavior: POTH Hub vs Device Hub #ASCOM #iEXOS-100

Bob Trepiccione

I have ascom 6.5 installed.

When selecting  the PMC-8 driver directly in Astrophotography Tool the slew controls work as expected.

If I choose Device Hub Telescope, AST can connect, park, unpark, but the slew controls trigger an exception error in AST.

Here's the  interesting part...if I select POTH Hub in AST, all controls work.

This holds true for using ASCOM Pad, as well.
Works with POTH Hub, slew controls do not operate when Device Hub is selected...

Any insight from our ASCOM afficienados?

I think this post is relevant to this forum. If not, ease delete...
