Hello,
 
I have an older iPad, due to its age I cannot download ExploreStars app
So I bought a new iPhone X with ios 14.
 
I get a message saying incompatible.
 
Please can you advise if the latest ios is compatible with ExploreStars?
 
And what if any is the course of action to be taken?

Sounds like a fun project during lockdown in the UK. It's not the best of weather here either so it keeps the hobby going. Presumably the Raspberry Pi is controlled remotely from a PC or laptop? I like the idea of fixing a laser pointer to the mount. I tried using one manually a few days ago and really liked the instantaneous visual feedback. But for it to be really useful, it needs to be fixed. Thanks very much for the post.

Hello IEXOS users,

In my never-ending pursuit of a lighter more advanced setup, I recently purchased an ES IEXOS100 EQ mount. I struggled with learning how to control it working through all the methods, and eventually not being happy with the workflows and software ES offered, especially coming from much higher end mounts and more established and plug and play software. So I decided to build an ASAIR, Stellarmate, ATIK Base ‘clone’, and try my hand at plate-solving with KSTARS. I first downloaded the free ASTROBERRY OS software:

Then mounted it to a 32GB (fast Sandisk Extreme class 10) Micro SD Card and booted my old Rasberry PI 3 from it. Over the next few days I played around with it learning the ropes from various tutorials on youtube. Once I realized what it was capable of and how easy it was to initially configure, I was hooked and ordered a more capable RasberryPi v4.0. (The Pi3 worked great, but i wanted the Pi4's USB 3.0).

For adding a gamepad (wireless or wired), which I also did. Just plug one in and turn it on in Kstars.

The Kstars software controls the main imaging camera, the guiding camera, the focuser, and the mount. Plate solving is done to polar align and sync to targets for extremely accurate goto and tracking. Guiding is done via PHD guiding direct from the Astroberry console, while everything else is managed via kstars windows/android app on any machine on my network (or the Astroberry server's own hosted wifi if no other wifi is available). Plate solving data is sent to astrometry.net for reasonably fast solves, but I am impatient so I installed my own local copy of the plate-solving astrometry data on my astroberry server, as a result plate solving an image now only takes about 3 seconds. So that is the 10,000 foot view of how to enjoy the IEXOS 100 mount to the fullest and control it remotely like a pro.

But in an effort to increase the functionality of the mount. I utilized a pre-existing Azimuth adjuster I found on thingiverse.com and modified it to suit my needs. I then took an existing laser holder mount and modified it to suit my needs. I then set out to design a IEXOS top mount to hold the laser mount components in a secure and easily removable way, as well as other ways of mounting for future components. The result is the IEXOS 100 mount that I wished it was from the day it was unwrapped. Pointing the scope at the north star is easier and repeatable. And adjusting azimuth is a breeze.

I had to reduce my Samsung Galaxy Tab A tablet's "screen zoom". All my other apps fit the screen just fine the way it was set, so I've never had the need to change that setting until now. 
 
To fix this issue: go to "settings" > "display" > "font and screen zoom" > "screen zoom" and reduce the "screen zoom" setting.
 
Now ... if I could figure out how to get the catalog to load and work.

Tyler,

My Huawei tablet (an 8.4" Mediapad M5) works with Explore Stars. All that needs to be done is to change a display setting.  Go to Settings - Display - View Mode - set to SMALL by tapping the "-" symbol (Default is the standard setting). I suspect that this will work with the 10" Huawei too.

I find it awkward with a tablet but am making slow progress. Every time I go out, I make a step forward. I have along the way tried using Cartes du Ciel using a laptop and serial cable link, again it's a learning curve. More stuff to learn. But, I was out tonight with a tablet and still making progress. I'm at the point now where I am  about to see if I can get tracking to work. No doubt the first photos will show trails and it will be back to improving on all the previous steps required. I am sure my progress is hindered by lack of knowledge and lack of practice. But, I agree, trying to use a tablet to move the scope to the right point isn't easy. I think I might try using a serial cable and a games controller. It sits better in the hand and you can look at the scope whilst you use it.10" tablets are like handling a bar of soap.

updated it, it is working great so should I try to update it or leave it alone ?

Sizing displays across multiple devices is a real challenge for developers.  HTML designs have enough trouble across different browsers and screen sizes. On mobile the layout of the product needs to be handled differently then anything that designed for desktop.   This is alot of work and might have to be done multiple times in different development environments and code sets to make it compatible in different ecosystems.

The heart of the Soul Nebula (IC1848)

It wa s a cold night on Jon Wood Astronomy Field, about an hour east of Atlanta, but the company was good and the skies were stable and clear. This was the first run at it and represents the hydrogen-alpha channel. I uploaded another version of this image without stars. Starnet++ is quite good at making star masks but my MacBook Pro turns into a space heater!  Imaged with an ED-127CF FCD100 telescope, an ES PMC-Eight G-11 mount, and a ZWO ASI-1600MM-Cool camera with an EFW8 Filter Wheel.  I still need to get flats and darks calibrated and a few frames with oblong stars need to be tossed out, but the initial results are very pleasing to the eye.

The image was captured with no filters, just the Canon 7D Mk2. To be honest I was a little bit surprised how the colors came out, but i liked it. Not sure how that color shift happend.

With my 6D it is similar to your image which is more what the colors really look like ;-)

Hi,

Just to add my two cents, I too use the i-EXOS 100 with the fine AZ adjuster on the EQ5 mount.

It has made a world of difference, works flawlessly 
and fits perfectly. Now it’s a joy to use the mount.
